Gladstone a hotspot for personalised plates

GLADSTONE has been named one of Queensland's top 10 spots for personalised number plate lay-bys during the 2013-2014 financial year.

In the Fitzroy area alone, 3836 plates were ordered.

The Gold Coast was the top-ranking location, making up more than 12% of Personalised Plates Queensland's sales.

All Classic Motor Club of Central Queensland's Glen Hamilton has seen plenty of examples of creative car owners.

He lists XLR8 and 4D, for Ford vehicles, as two unique combinations cruising CQ roads.

Mr Hamilton said name initials and birth and wedding dates were often popular on plates.

There are almost 700,000 personalised plates on vehicles cruising Queensland roads.

The top-selling plate statewide was the design with a colour background or coloured numbers, or both.

However PPQ has had to pull out the stop sign for some requests, with 14% of plate searches on ppq.com.au between April and September considered inappropriate.

The plate combinations were knocked back for being obscene, promoting unsafe behaviour, or offensive to a religion, culture, nation, race, or a minority group.

Fan's plate of origin

EVERY TIME Sandie Wright leaves home she proudly displays her personalised number plates.

But Mrs Wright didn't want one that reflected her car or her initials - she sought one for her rugby league team.

The mad Queensland Maroons fan would have had something different to her GSA 26 if it was available.

"I would love to have picked QLD-ER but it doesn't fit," she said.

Mrs Wright's choice stands out - a Maroons special edition as well as standing for more than just her birthday, the 26th.

Her number plate takes into account her whole family.
