Motorists zooming through roadworks

WARWICK motorists are being urged to take it easy in roadworks zones, with new research showing an alarming number of motorists speeding through these areas.

RACQ Executive Manager Technical and Safety Policy Steve Spalding said a disturbing 29% of Queensland motorists had owned up to speeding through roadworks with reduced speed signs.

"Drivers who ignore speed limits at roadworks put both their lives and those of construction workers at risk," Mr Spalding said.

"It's also disappointing that more than 90% of respondents said the main reason they speed through these areas was to keep up with the flow of surrounding traffic.

"This is dangerous in itself as motorists who feel pressured to travel above the speed limit can be more distracted in their driving."

Mr Spalding said inattention and simply not agreeing with the speed limit set were the other significant reasons for speeding.
