Movie night at St Mark’s to highlight plight of refugees
THE story of Sudanese refugees will be highlighted in a special one-off screening of the film The Good Lie at St Mark's in Warwick on Saturday night.
Starring Reese Witherspoon, the American film is being shown to raise money for the Toowoomba Refugee and Migrant Support Centre to celebrate Refugee Week.
Sue Hamlet, who helped organise the movie night, said the film was nice and soft.
"It touches on the lost boys of Sudan," she said.
"The movie hasn't been released in Australia, so this is a very special screening."
In the film Reese Witherspoon plays an American woman who takes in four Sudanese refugees after they win the chance to relocate for a new life in a new country.
For St Mark's Reverend Rod Winterton, the film was certainly an eye-opener, and one he thoroughly enjoyed.
"The film does an amazing job," he said.
"I've met and spoken to dozens of Sudanese refugees who've probably had similar stories to this movie."
Sudanese refugee Akol Mager from Toowoomba will give a short talk on the night about his experiences.
Mrs Hamlet said the night was all about raising awareness for Refugee Week, with the profits going to TRAMS.
"TRAMS do a fantastic job in the community and look after a number of people on the Southern Downs," she said.
"We'll have an information table on the night talking about refugee issues."
The movie will begin at 6.30pm at the St Mark's Hall on Grafton St.
Tickets to the screening are $10 for adults and $5 for school students, which includes a light supper.
