MP urges retailer to reconsider closing centre
MEMBER for Southern Downs James Lister has offered his sympathies to workers, suppliers and contractors affected by the impending closure of Big W's distribution centre in Warwick in 2023.
Mr Lister yesterday said he had been "deeply saddened” by the news and had written to Woolworths Group to urge them to reconsider their decision to close Warwick's Big W distribution centre.
The Warwick site offered "enormous” strategic advantages and a strong workforce, he said.
"I also urged the company to announce as soon as possible that the vital Big W retail store in Rose City Shoppingworld will not be closed,” Mr Lister said.
"That store is just so important to jobs and small business in town.
"I have also written to the Minister for State Development, the Honourable Cameron Dick MP, to ask for his assistance in encouraging the company to keep its important presence in Warwick.
"I have also asked the minister for a briefing from his department to see what we can do to keep Big W here and to encourage other large companies to come to Southern Downs to grow jobs and the local economy.
"My sympathies go to the workers and small businesses affected by today's announcement, and I will be doing all I can to encourage Woolworths Ltd to keep its presence in Warwick, and to attract more investors to our region.”
