100yo Warwick school building gets makeover worth millions

STAGE two of a multi-million-dollar building project is under way at Assumption College.

Construction on the new music department has begun and can be seen from the entrance on Locke St.

It follows the $300,000 stage one renovation of St James Hall which was completed at the start of the year.

Part of a future buildings and improvements project, the 100-year-old building now features updated heating and cooling systems, and exits that now meet safety requirements.

The newly renovated St James Hall building is now being used predominantly as the students' drama learning centre.

From a combination of federal, state and school funding, the complete project will cost $4.5million.

Including the expansion of the music rooms and new industrial art classrooms, a 2000 sqm indoor sports hall will be completed from renovations of an existing building. Two new outdoor basketball courts will also be added to the school.

The sports hall will have two attached flexible learning areas and a store room. The art rooms will include a design room and a store room, to be at current shed level.

These new buildings will be located behind the St James Hall and on the eastern end of the school oval.

Used for Years 7 to 9 curriculum music classes and all-over instrumental lessons, the music department will be expanding to 365sqm covering three classrooms.

The two years of planning will see much-needed improvements for the secondary school, Principal Kort Goodman said.

"We got the green light on the project in December 2016 and it's opened up a lot of resources for the students," MrGoodman said.

"Due to the increasing number of enrolments we needed to renovate and update our current facilities."

The 440 current students are already taking advantage of the completed upgrades, the principal said.

"Part of the first stage with St James Hall, a Sacred Space garden was created not only for the students to use but also the community. This has been a favourite spot for the kids," MrGoodman said.

"Like most of us, the students have been really excited and eagerly anticipating the expansions," he said.

The final stages will be worked on throughout the year with an expected completion date before the beginning of the 2019 school year.
