Mum escapes as police take child

IT is often said a mother's love can move mountains, but for one Warwick mum it saw her escape not only a set of handcuffs but also the restraints of a police car.

Officers from the Department of Community Services attended the woman's residence just outside of Warwick on Tuesday afternoon.

During court proceedings yesterday it was heard the visit was in response to concerns about the welfare of her child, and when the woman was told the officers were taking her child, she became aggressive.

Police intervened in the situation and gave the mother a number of directions to move away and stop interfering, but she refused to comply with the instructions.

The police prosecutor said the woman had consumed alcohol earlier in the day.

As a result of her insolence, police arrested the woman, handcuffed her and placed her in the back of a police vehicle.

The police prosecutor told the court that while inside the vehicle the mother somehow managed to wriggle free of her handcuffs and proceeded to climb from the back seat to the front, exiting the vehicle.

She then attempted to flee before being remanded again by police, after which she taken to the watchhouse, where she spent the night in custody.

The woman appeared in Warwick Magistrates Court following her jail stay and yesterday pleaded guilty to two charges of obstructing police.

A third charge of public nuisance was dismissed.

Magistrate Anne Thacker chastised the woman on her bad behaviour and described her conduct as an "over-reaction" to the circumstances.

She told the woman that while she understood the situation would be "terribly upsetting", it didn't excuse her behaviour.

Taking into account the woman's overnight jail stay, Magistrate Thacker ordered the woman be convicted but not punished further.
