Mum fears for her kids
WHEN Warwick Central School parent Kara Hamilton makes the twice daily trip to school, her three sons are always in her line of vision.
With eldest son Conner juggling his basketball and back-pack, two-year-old Blake constantly pulling away to inspect things and one-year old Seth in a pram, keeping the boys in line can be a hard task – which is why passing traffic outside Warwick Central is a constant worry.
“We live on Dragon St so walk to school every day,” she said.
“There are a lot of cars along (Guy St) outside the school, especially at pick-up and drop-off times, and I do worry about their safety.
“That’s why I put Blake on a harness – he tends to wander.”
Parking and motorist congestion outside Warwick Central State School has been a worry for a number of parents.
With the primary school having to share parking spaces with neighbouring businesses and child care places, parents have to be patient when picking their children up.
Mum Jo Sullivan has had children at Warwick Central for 15 years and said the problem has only intensified.
“It’s gotten worse. You see a lot of near-misses – everyone seems to be in a hurry when they drive past,” she said.
“We could do with more alternative parking at school. It’s terrible the way things are at the moment.
“For you to get a decent, nearby park, you have to be here at 2.30pm.”
Fellow parent Judith Elliott bought the issue to the attention of the Daily News following our coverage of Warwick East parking woes.
She said she would like to see either a drop-off zone established or more parking made available a short distance away.
“We thought we could use Myall Ave and make that a one-way street,” she said.
“Parking and congestion have been a bone of contention for 18 months. The problem is the area the school’s in a business district.
“When cars go through the roundabouts, they don’t stop quickly enough. The crossings used to be closer and we’ve moved them further away, but it hasn’t seemed to have helped.
“Our crossing ladies regularly get near-misses.”
