A DARLING Downs mother has been left horrified after an orange she cut for her kids' lunchboxes bizarrely turned purple overnight.

Nine News reports that Chinchilla mum-of-five Angela Postle had sent oranges away for testing after one changed colour overnight when sliced and left in a bowl.

It is reported the oranges were bought from her local Woolworths store in Chinchilla earlier this month.

The oranges have been sent to the Queensland Health Forensic and Scientific Services for examination.

Mrs Postle told Nine News she returned the fruit to the grocery store because she was concerned it posed a health risk.

She said despite the purple colouring, the fruit smelt and felt like an orange.

Woolworths confirmed the fruit had been returned due to the discolouration.
