Tony Munro in top player award win

CRICKET: Sovereign Animals star Tony Munro has become the first player from his club to win the overall player of the year award in Warwick cricket.

Munro received 18 points to win by two from RSL Diggers opener Jeff Morris.

He capped a fine year to win the Denis Rettke Memorial All Rounder of the Year trophy. After hitting 139 early in the season, Munro amassed 439 runs at an average of 36.58, took 16 wickets at 19.68 and three catches.

Morris was the leading batsman with 553 runs at 39.5 and Colin O'Brien, from RSL Diggers, the leading wicket taker with 23 at 12.47. O'Brien was the only player with two five-wicket bags for the fixture season, 6-24 and 5-16.

After wicket-keeping most of his career, Chris Malone (Wheatvale) had a turn at the bowling crease in 2013-2014 and finished with the bowling average, 4.75, after taking eight wickets for 38 runs off 11.1 overs, including a best of 6-17. Warwick Cricket Association president Michael Bourke said as the A and reserve-grade teams played in the same fixture competition, it was decided to have an overall player of the year.

"It was a great effort for Tony to win after playing for one of the teams which finished in the bottom half of the competition," Bourke said.

Vicki Kirkland received the volunteer of the year award after co-ordinating the In2Cricket program for the beginners in 2013-14 and being a driving force behind the Sovereign Animals side in Warwick cricket.
