Murray River drowning death: Mum to undergo evaluation

A MOTHER charged with murder and attempted murder after allegedly attacking them in the Murray River will undergo a psychiatric evaluation.

The woman was on Monday charged with murder during a court appearance at Deniliquin.

The charge relates to the death of a five-year-old boy whose body was located in the Murray River at Moama on Saturday, March 4.

The woman was last week charged with attempt to drown person with intent to murder in relation to a nine-year-old boy.

He remains in a stable condition at hospital in Melbourne.

The woman was refused bail to reappear in Deniliquin Local Court on Monday, May 2.

Police were called to the scene at Moama, on the New South Wales-Victoria border, about 7:00pm last Thursday.

One young boy was rushed to hospital, and the body of the other was later recovered.

The woman, who is aged in 20s but cannot be identified for legal reasons, did not appear in court, the ABC reported.

The school the boys attended issued a statement and said it was a "dark time for students, staff and parents."

The principal said the youngest boy was bright and engaging and his older brother was much loved.

"We area close knit community and this tragedy has had a profound effect that will require much support."

The school said it would continue to offer counselling to support staff, students, teachers and parents.
