Museum head plans Laura Geitz statue at Allora

NETBALL: There will be two statues in Queensland of Allora, Firebirds and Diamonds goalkeeper Laura Geitz if Perry Cronin has his way.

The Allora Regional Sports Museum president has made some inquiries about the possibility a bronze the same as the one planned for the Brisbane Entertainment Centre at Boondall could be erected outside the museum in Herbert St, Allora.

"I have spoken to the CEO at the entertainment centre as well as State and Federal members of Parliament and representatives of the Southern Downs Regional Council,” he said.

"I can think of a page full of positives and only one negative, money. I believe there could be some government funding to go towards the cost.

"It would be a tourist attraction at Allora. I haven't spoken to too many people but those I have spoken to said go for it. It could be incorporated into the Allora Streetscape planning.”

Cronin believes it would be more economical to produce two at once.

"If we are ever going to have a Laura statue, it needs to be done at the same time.”

The bronze of Geitz at Boondall, as planned by the Queensland Government, will be placed opposite one of legendary basketballer Leroy Loggins.

"Laura has lifted the profile of netball above all expectations,” Cronin said.

"Her profile has helped push netball to a similar profile to rugby league.”

Geitz said she felt very privileged that the Queensland Government had decided to make a statue to her.

"While a little embarrassed, I am part of a team and it hasn't just been my individual efforts that has put netball on the map in Queensland,” she said.

As for the Allora move, Geitz said Cronin had been a great supporter of her involvement in netball.

"His continued work for the museum is exceptional.”
