Musicians bring cultures together
RECONCILIATION danced to the sound of a country and western beat yesterday at Warwick's first Closing the Gap Variety show.
In celebration of the beginning of NAIDOC week, the Travelling Country Music Association and the Awakening voices of the Harmony Singers teamed up to produce a musical get-together of a variety of cultures.
"A show like this hasn't happened anywhere in Australia," one of the organisers Norma Gean said.
"Before Christmas we were thinking about doing something for NAIDOC and thought 'what are we going to do to bring the community together' - and this is it."
With bands from as far as Brisbane and audience members from as far as Dalby the day had something for every taste.
"Some bands have 200 years of country music experience between them," organiser Marline Wilkins-Crowe added.
More than 120 music lovers from all walks of life attended the performance that ran throughout the day.
Organisers hope money made from the day will go towards the all Aboriginal women's choir the Awakening Voices of the Harmony Singers.
"The group is the only all female one of its kind," Norma said.
"We aim to tour one day to travel and inspire other groups."
The official didgeridoo player of the day, Leroy Brown, who was self taught said events like the variety concert were important.
"It teaches the wider community a different culture and gives them a better understanding," he said.
"And it's fun."
