Young stroke victim ignored time and time again

MY son had a stroke when he was 22 he is now 24.

He went to Toowoomba Hospital several times complaining of a persistent migraine. He was given painkillers and sent home time after time over a period of two months.

Never once being taken seriously.

He was even accused of being a junkie and an attention seeker by staff.

After an episode of a massive nose bleed late at night he awoke the next morning with the left side of his face drooping and weakness in his left leg and arm.

He again when to Toowoomba Hospital where he was admitted this time for four days.

He was diagnosed as having basila migraines which only females get as they are related to reproductive systems of women.

Again while there he was given painkillers

No cat scan and sent home again once his pain was under control.

He then went immediately to his GP as his symptoms where just the same as before his hospital stay.

She sent him immediately for a cat scan at Darling Downs Radiology when he was diagnosed as having a brain aneurysm and was sent the next day to PA Hospital in Brisbane where he again spend one week.

There they diagnosed him as having had a stroke a week or more prior.

Unfortunately, if Toowoomba Hospital had taken him seriously the first few times he went his health may not be what it is today.

Why didn't they bother to do the scan when he first went?

He is now no longer able to work.

Centrelink refuse to pay put him on a disability benefit even though he provided all the necessary doctor certificates and medical records.

They say he is still able to work and want him to go on Newstart despite his doctors saying he cannot ever work again due to his brain aneurysm and the long term effects of his stroke .

Moral of the story is never just take a nurse or doctor's word for anything if you know you're not feeling right. Fight for appropriate health care and don't let them fob you off, because they will.

Don't let them make you feel like an inconvenience.

My son lives at home with myself and my husband and we have to fully support him as he gets zero from Centrelink.

Mostly he is doing well but some days are better than others.
