'Mystery developers' weighing up options for One Mile site
COUNCIL and previous owners of the Town and Country Centre and the now demolished One Mile Hotel are remaining tight-lipped on the new owners and plans for the site.
A mystery developer has purchased a 10,673sqm parcel of land along Brisbane Street West Ipswich from Hooper Street to the Town and Country Centre.
Local councillor Andrew Antoniolli said he had spoken to the developer shortly after the hotel building was demolished and was told they were weighing up options for the site.
"They have a large parcel of land now in which to develop in what has been a fairly under-utilised site," Cr Antoniolli said.
"There obviously is enormous development potential for those properties combined.
"The new owners are weighing up their options as to what they intend to put there but at this stage they have not presented anything to myself or to council as to their intent."
Both Cr Antoniolli and Mayor Paul Pisasale would not reveal the identity of the new owner.
However Cr Pisasale said it was a significant site for the city and he would be taking a close look at any future plans for the property.
Cr Antoniolli said the discussions he had with the developers were "very preliminary".
"They have a large portfolio of land in southeast Queensland," he said.
"They told me, a couple of days prior to Christmas, which was subsequent to the demolition, they didn't have any concrete proposals for it, they are looking at all options."
All three parcels are zoned as local business and industry.
Cr Antoniolli said the site was not likely to be developed as residential because of the 1974 floodlines which covered the entire site.
"It is a significant entry point to Ipswich Central and as a result of that I would like to think that the developer will come up with something that is befitting of such a significant gateway.
"Before Home HQ, West Ipswich had been very underutilised in its development potential; the bulky goods type retail.
"I certainly won't be accepting a second-rate development."
