Narrow loss before semis
THE Redbacks’ hopes of a home semi-final were dashed on Saturday with a seven-point loss to USQ in Toowoomba.
USQ scored 10.10 (70) to the Redbacks 8.15 (63).
The lead changed a number of times and the Redbacks led by three points with five minutes to go, but some wayward kicking late in the game cost the team from the Southern Downs dearly.
With Coolaroo beating South Toowoomba by three points, Toowoomba Tigers won the minor premiership by four points from the Redbacks and South Toowoomba.
The Redbacks finished second with a far superior percentage so will play Toowoomba Tigers in the major semi-final on August 27 at Rockville. South Toowoomba will play USQ in the knockout semi-final at Rockville on Saturday.
Redbacks vice-president Jason Wright said his side had a mixed game.
“Our lack of discipline at crucial times cost us dearly,” Wright said.
“We missed half a dozen goals from directly in front when the kicker wasn’t under a lot of pressure.”
Ruck rover Brendan Iles was strong yet again and was well supported by Andrew Bardley, Matt Sinkins, Cameron Peterson, Nick Donges and Clinton McErvale.
Aaron Lawlor and Iles kicked two goals each for the Redbacks with Wright, Bryce Bodsworth, Coen Slatter and Julius Sakrewski kicking one each.
Wright said the team had been knocked around a bit in the past fortnight with physical games, so it was likely the first training session this week would be only a light run.
“The extra week off will allow us to get everyone 100% for the semi-final,” Wright said.
“The rest of our season is at Rockville which has its advantages with the larger field.
“It gets us out of our comfort zone which is the smaller ground at Slade Park.”
If the Redbacks win the semi-final, they will book a spot in the grand final on September 10 at Rockville.
A loss will put the side up against the knockout semi winner on September 3 at Rockville.
