Nathan comes of age in hurry
NATHAN Jones reckons he's come of age as a golfer after 73 holes of play against the best in Warwick.
He turned 17 between the second and third round of the championships and won his first A-grade title on Sunday.
Jones established an early lead in the first round when he scored 71 and was never headed.
Former Sunshine Coast trainee professional Shane McKenzie is one of the few left handers in the club and drew level with Jones on the 72nd hole of the championships.
"I felt the pressure a bit and made a few mistakes on the 18th to end up in the bunker," Jones said.
"At the start of the hole, I had a three-shot lead and missed my putt to tap the ball in for a seven, two over. Shane hit his putt from one and a half metres for a birdie which put us into a play-off.
"I was shaking on the tee shot in the first play-off hole. It was nervous against such a good player."
Jones played conservative golf and putted from 2m for one over and McKenzie overshot the green to finish one behind.
The champion will finish year 12 at Warwick State High School in November and hopes to secure a traineeship as a golf professional.
"I am now playing off a handicap of two and want to be playing off scratch before I finish school; I practice three or four times a week."
In the women's, Sam Hinze won with a score of 314 to win her seventh title in succession and break the record of Joy Horgan who won six in a row. She is still 10 behind Joy for overall wins.
One of the most prestigious trophies presented in the Warwick Golf Club is the Carol Russell Memorial Trophy for women's nett in the championships which was won by Kerry Wharton. Patsy McIntosh (B), Sharron Cooper (C) and Jill Barnes (veterans) were title winners.
