National achiever wins an award at home

HOCKEY: Assumption College student Bailey Rutledge has now won two gold medals at national level and is a monthly Daily News/Warwick Credit Union Junior Sports Star of the Month winner.

Rutledge competed for the Queensland under-15 team that won the nationals in Wollongong earlier this year.

He started the national carnival as a striker and scored an early goal before moving back to fullback when a regular fullback suffered a broken thumb.

Two years ago, he won gold for the Queensland team in a national school hockey carnival in Cairns.

Rutledge was used off the bench in last year's Warwick men's grand final and made an immediate impact for a Saints team which won the premiership.

A sporting all-rounder, Rutledge has also played junior representative cricket for Warwick.

He is playing in a Toowoomba team at this weekend's state under-15 hockey championships at the Sunshine Coast.

Nominations for junior (under-18) and senior sports star awards are welcome at any time to gerardw@warwick dailynews.com.au.
