National APRA rodeo record goes after 20 years

RODEO: Wandoan cowboy Dave Worsfold has broken a 20-year bareback bronc ride record in the Australian Professional Rodeo Association.

Worsfold has won the last two bareback titles at The Warwick Rodeo National Finals and will be aiming to make it three in succession in October.

He set a new record in winning the bareback bronc ride at the Nebo Rodeo on Saturday.

Worsfold scored 91 on the Gill Brothers horse Little Egypt.

The previous record of 90 was set by Tamworth rider Darren Clarke on John Gill's Puberty Blues at Cessnock in 1997 and equalled by Wade Clifford on John Gill's Ramblin Angel at the Melbourne International in 2010. Before Clarke scored 90, Warwick cowboy Steve Hilton held the record for five years with 89 at Roma on the Stuart and Kris Grayson horse Honky Tonk.

Worsfold was confident if he could make time on the mare Little Egypt on Saturday, he could win at Nebo.

"I won at Roma the first time I drew her and have won the four times I have ridden her,” Worsfold said.

"You know if you do something wrong on Little Egypt, she will throw you.”

His previous best score in Australia was 89 in Deniliquin (NSW) three years ago.

Worsfold made circuit finals during eight years of competition in the United States where he had a number of scores at 88, 89 and 90.

"A score of 91 blows me away,” he said.

"It is amazing to break a record previously jointly held by Darren Clarke and Wade Clifford. They are good mates and Darren is one of the best to ride bareback horses in Australia.”

In between rodeos, Worsfold rides plenty of horses as his family muster beef cattle on horseback on their five properties between Wandoan and Roma.

Warwick rider Mitch Eastwell was second in the rope and tie at Nebo and Lucas Wilson fourth in saddle bronc on Take Me Easy from Gill Brothers.
