National gold for popular Warwick cyclist

CYCLING: Warwick cyclist John Eder has won his third successive national gold medal in the 750m time trial.

After winning the time trial and keirin at the state championships at the Anna Meares Velodrome at Chandler, Eder went on to the Masters Track Cycling Australian Championships in Melbourne.

He is now in his third year in the 45-49 years age group and won the time trial in 50.87 seconds, .1 of a second in front of the second-placed rider from Sydney. Eder trailed with half a lap to go in the time trial and made up two bike lengths to win gold.

Eder was second in the sprint and 3km team pursuit.

In the sprint, he was fastest qualifier in 10.95 seconds and won his quarter final 1-0 and the semi final 2-0 and then lost the gold medal ride 2-1.

"I was disappointed not to win the sprint as I had bad stomach cramps and could not pedal flat out on the bends," Eder said.

"However I was beaten by good friend Matthew Glanville so was happy for him."

Eder competed for the first time in the team pursuit as part of a Queensland team at the nationals.

"My job was to do the first three laps (750m) at the right pace for the other three riders and then pull off and let the more endurance-based riders finish off the 3km. Our team finished only two seconds behind the winners which we were happy with as we had never ridden before as a team."

Eder will now travel to Los Angeles in October for a second successive year for the Masters Track Cycling World Championships after winning two bronze medals last year.
