National orienteering heading to Southern Downs
ORIENTERING: The Southern Downs has become a must-go destination for orienteers across the nation.
This time, the best competitors in the nation will be at Amiens in the Stanthorpe area for the middle and long distance events as part of the Australian Orienteering Championships 2016.
Orienteering Queensland will host the nationals from September 24.
Events are being held at the Gold Coast and in the Scenic Rim area before all roads will lead to Amiens for the final two days on October 1-2.
It is expected 500 orienteers from all over Australia will be on the Southern Downs for the weekend.
There are categories for all ages and standards in orienteering with middle distance event set to be from 2km to 8km and long distance events from 2km to 16km.
Liz Bourne and her late husband Eric Andrews were part of the organisations of past national and international events on the Southern Downs and this week Bourne has been one of the volunteers in the Amiens area preparing for the event.
The local club, the Bullecourt Boulder Bounders, will be involved at an event expected to attract orienteers from all parts of Australia as well as New Zealand, New Caledonia and parts of Asia.
