National vice-captain is a sports star winner
WARWICK hockey player Adam Byrne has won a monthly senior sports award following his selection as vice-captain of the Australian over 35s hockey side.
Byrne was part of the Queensland team which won the national title in masters hockey in Hobart late in 2017.
He plays in the backs and will form a national leadership team with striker and captain Anthony Trail from Victoria in the World Cup this year in Barcelona.
Last year, he was coach of the Warwick team which finished third in the state championships at Queens Park, Warwick. The home team was within 90 seconds of making a third successive state division 1 final when they conceded a stroke while leading 3-2 in the semi.
Early in his career, Byrne played for Queensland as a striker before moving to the backs where he won a player of the year award in A1 hockey in Brisbane.
Byrne has won $100 from Warwick Credit Union and is one of 11 winners to be honoured at the annual Daily News/Warwick Credit Union Senior Sports Star of the Year awards on February 19 at Kings at the Warwick RSL.
