National hockeypick a surprise for Toni Cox
SIX years after deciding she wanted to play hockey for Queensland, Toni Cox has made the state over-45s to play in the nationals in Darwin on July 7-20.
Cox was named in the team after the state championships at Maryborough.
She has played club hockey in both Warwick and Toowoomba for the past four years to improve her game and secure state selection.
At the weekend, she played for the Toowoomba 1 team which went down 2-0 in the division 1 grand final.
"I played all five games at right half and was very happy with my performance in defence," Cox said.
"It didn't enter my mind that I would make the team this year."
Last year, she was a Queensland shadow player and has played for South Australia in four nationals.
Warwick wins three
THE Warwick ladies team won three of its five games in Division 5 at the 30th annual state championships.
Warwick beat Townsville, Brisbane and Maryborough and lost 1-0 to Ipswich and 2-0 to Rockhampton.
Best player awards were won by Angie Groves, Megan Neal, Helen Butler, Nic Burley and Kerri Fitch at the championships which finished on Monday.
Fitch said captain-coach Sharron Cooper and managers Narelle Mason and Kerri Elsner did a great job organising the team.
Gold Coast won Division 2 under former Warwick players Jodie Olsen and Bonita Tyler.
