Netballer honoured with baton bearer role in Warwick
GAMES: Warwick Netball Association secretary Linda Bunch is "extremely excited” to be chosen as a Warwick baton bearer for the Queen's Baton Relay on March 20 en route to the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
Linda lived the first 15 years of her life at Karara, 50km west of Warwick, and then moved at Warwick.
"It was a pleasant shock to receive the email to say I was going to be a baton bearer,” she said.
"I am excited to be representing netball but also the Warwick community.”
Linda has put a lot of time, money and effort into netball. She has been Warwick Netball Association secretary for the past 11 years and was last year's Netball Queensland Volunteer of the Year.
"It wasn't about who was in the Australia team when I first played netball, I just really enjoy the team environment,” she said.
Linda sees herself as part of a team on March 29, a team of baton bearers.
She and her husband Bruce operate Albion St Auto but she isn't gunning to carry the baton past the business.
"It would be nice to carry it past WIRAC or Barnes Park or exchange the baton with Australian netballer Laura Geitz,” Linda said.
She admits she does a lot of work for netball when in her work office.
"I have just loved netball since I was young,” she said.
"One friend from netball suggested that I would need to carry the baton with my arm high just like a shoulder pass in netball.”
As well as being a baton bearer, Linda will be at the Games as a spectator having snared tickets to the first weekend of netball.
She went online at noon yesterday in the hope of securing tickets released for the finals but missed out.
