Netballers prepare for Darling Downs Inter-district carnival

NETBALL: THE Warwick and District Netball Association hosts Day 1 of the Darling Downs Inter-District Carnivals this Sunday at Barnes Park.

Warwick will be represented by 10 teams with age groups from 11 years to senior.

Barnes Park will be the venue for 100 games from 8am Sunday. Come along to cheer on the Warwick teams.

On the club scene, two of the new teams for 2016 took to the court this week for an evenly contested Warwick netball game.

A nice steady start was the theme for the first quarter for both teams with a 4-3 score at quarter-time.

The tempo increased slightly over the next two quarters with Condy starting the final session with a four-goal lead 20-16.

However, One Hit Wonders came storming home with a dominant 14-7 final quarter to secure the win 30-27 in A grade.

In A grade, there was a rematch of the 2015 grand final when Doorslammers played Confro.

Both teams boast new additions to their line-ups this year which adds extra diversity to the unchanged intensity and competitive- ness to this fantastic A-grade competition.

As expected a close quarter-by-quarter game ensued. Doorslammers gained a 13-10 advantage by half-time but in a competition of this level three goals is not breathing space. Confro confirmed that by shortening that lead to only one goal for the final quarter.

Full credit must be given to the defenders for both teams as Doorslammers trio Sandy Groves, Susan Ellis and Taylor Mentha managed to disrupt the smooth attaching flow of Confro as did Sally Higgins and Julia Murphy for Confro against the Doorslammer shooters.

Doorslammers kept composure beautifully and surged home with a 11-4 final quarter to take the win and competition points 29-21. – Linda Bunch
