Warwick netballers show mettle in championships

WARWICK will field eight teams at the Darling Downs Inter-district Championship held at the Nell E Robinson Park in Toowoomba tomorrow.

Five Warwick teams sit in the top two positions of their divisions, with two games left to play in the morning before finals begin in the afternoon.

The Warwick senior team has been unbeaten in its 16 games during the four rounds of the inter-district competition.

The team is coached by former Brisbane top-grade netballer Jaimie McMillan, who plays as both a shooter and a defender.

McMillan said she never expected the team to have such success in the competition.

"The team has really come together and built on what we wanted to achieve," McMillan said.

"The competition has been different in previous seasons so it was a pleasant surprise we have done so well.

"I think it has given the girls a great opportunity to learn and grow."

McMillan and her senior team-mates hope they can finish what has been a fairytale run by bringing home the trophy with them at the end of the championship.

"The ideal way to finish would be to bring that trophy back with us but I'm already so happy with how the girls have played."

The Warwick team has only two round games remaining before the finals, where they are likely to meet either Goondiwindi or Toowoomba.

The girls will be feeling confident after beating both teams in the group stages already, with a narrow win over a tough Toowoomba team.

Goondiwindi was seen as the bench-mark team going into the tournament but proved no problem for a focused Warwick team that produced what McMillan called their best game so far with an 18-point win.

Closing the gap between junior and senior teams has been a highlight of the tournament for the girls, with the younger teams coming along to watch the senior players.

McMillan said she was happy her team could set a bench mark for the younger girls and was delighted at the chance to help encourage and support the young teams.

Warwick 4, coached by Kerri Shooter in the 13/14 years second division, is in first position and is also on track for a finals appearance.

Warwick 2 (15 years), Warwick 3 (14 years) and Warwick 8 (11/12 years) are both placed second in their divisions.

Also playing are Warwick 5, 6 and 7 (11/12 years).
