New ball game for Redbacks
THE Redbacks facilities at Roddies Oval have been rated good enough to host a NAB pre-season AFL game.
Club vice-president/senior coach Jason Wright said an AFL official had made this statement as the finishing touches were being put on the new clubhouse.
"The ground is large enough for a NAB Cup game, $750,000 in money and voluntary work has gone into facilities," Wright said.
He concedes the game would be in daylight as the club was only installing training lights, and not playing lights, in the next month.
The clubhouse project has been boosted by a $100,000 "Get Playing" grant from the Queensland Government.
Wright said the clubhouse was above the water heights of the 2010, 2011 and 2013 floods.
"We plan to use the canteen and change rooms for our April 13 home game against Dalby and then have it fully operational for the Anzac Cup game against South Burnett on April 27," Wright said.
Redbacks treasurer and under-14 coach Dave Drewery remembers when the club would take all its junior players and parents to away games in a mini bus.
"We now have junior games before the seniors and have between 60 and 80 players," he said.
Juniors welcome to call Drewery on 0418 730837.
