New films promote Refugee Week
REFUGEES’ active contributions to Australia is the theme of two new video productions launched on Immigration’s YouTube channel ImmiTV today, part of its promotion of this year’s Refugee Week.
A refugee farmer and his wife working to save money for their own dream farm, and a little girl’s tale of walking to school after earlier life in a refugee camp are two of the many thousands of Australia’s successful refugee stories artistically interpreted in 120 seconds on the small screen leading up to Refugee Week, which runs from June 19 to 25.
The two YouTube viral clips aptly titled, Farmer Wants a Life, and My Walk to School were created, produced and filmed by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship’s production and design team.
The Department of Immigration and Citizenship conceded the characters in the clips were fictional – portrayed by department staff and family members as well as an ensemble from the Canberra Youth Theatre.
However, it said the “composite of the stories the productions represent is an accurate depiction of the active contributions refugees are making to Australian communities, every day”.
“When we developed the creative we knew straight away, the main challenge was to tell a single story,” a departmental spokesman said.
“Australia has enjoyed – and continues to enjoy – a rich history of successful refugee settlement.
“We needed to capture the ‘spirit’ of the stories and that translated to the theme – Refugees actively contribute to Australian communities … and the Australian way of life.”
