New-found freedom in Warwick

AT 32 YEARS of age and living with a disability Kevin Davis has found independence and a whole new view of life at a shared-support residence outside Warwick.

Last year, Mr Davis was living in a care facility in Bowen, before his parents brought him to Warwick to be closer to family.

After a stint in a flat in town, Mr Davis and Merv Caton are the first residents in a grand old Queenslander on Yangan Rd, a residence set up by care organisation Quality Lifestyle Support.

Mr Davis said living on the property was peaceful.

"I didn't mind living in the care housing but this is just awesome," he said.

"I have so much freedom, and so many things to do.

"We're going to build a chook shed and we've been gardening, growing tomatoes and stuff."

It's been a bit of a learning curve as well for Mr Davis.

"I've been learning to cook and clean and tidy up for myself," he said.

"We've made muffins and lasagna and pasta, and I've had to do the washing up as well.

"It makes me feel really good to be able to do all of these things for myself."

With a 24-hour carer on site to help out, Mr Davis can also make the most of a social life.

"I have to plan my own activities and I do like to keep active," he said.

"I do taekwondo and go to gym a bit," he said.

"We do all our own shopping and also go to Sportability at WIRAC, which is a fun program.

"I've just got a girlfriend too, which is all very new but pretty exciting."

Quality Lifestyle Support director Robyn Cavanagh said the idea of the assisted living house was to offer quality of life to people with disabilities.

"It's their house, our staff are just visitors, there to help out," she said.

"They've turned it into a bachelor pad already, which is so great to see, they're loving it."

Mrs Cavanagh said they planned to use the 20 hectare property as a farm stay respite facility as well.

"That's a little way off, but we want to give patients an experience they wouldn't normally get in respite," she said.

"We've going to get lots of animals and I'm really excited about the potential of the investment."
