New Hope Coal is downsizing its planned mine expansion

A PLANNED mine expansion in the Darling Downs has been downsized by New Hope Coal.

New Hope told the State Government on Wednesday it would now opt for a smaller option.

A statement from Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney said the New Acland mine had significantly reduced its impact on agricultural land and impacts on the towns of Acland, Jondaryan and Oakey.

Previously, the state had told New Hope Coal it would not support a major expansion because it might risk valuable agricultural land.

Mr Seeney said the new proposal was 63% smaller than the original, cutting its size by 2300 hectares.

The State will now restart the approval process for this new proposal.
