New Killarney business takes op-shopping back to 1800s

A NEW Killarney business is taking things back to the 1800s by encouraging their customers to barter with their rare goods.

Owner of Bull's Trading Post Jennifer Carne said her store was putting a unique spin on the idea of a second-hand shop.

"People are able to bring in antiques or miscellaneous items they have lying around the house and we will either give them a price or trade them for some things in the shop,” Mrs Carne said.

By constantly selling and swapping out stock Mrs Carne said the Trading Post would always provide something new for return customers.

"Between customers bringing items in and myself always on the lookout at sales, stock won't be on the shelves long.”

She decided to open the store after a long period of being unsure where her life was headed.

"Instead of finding a job for myself I have created one,” she said.

With guidance from her close friend and former businessman Brett Godfrey, Mrs Carne has spent the last few months learning what it takes to run a business.

She said the biggest hurdle has been finding a balance between business and family.

"The days where I'm not here I have to be juggling appointments for my kids and my husband,” she said.

"It is a non-stop process but I am learning slowly but surely.”

Mr Godfrey said the most important lesson he has taught his friend is to learn the history and value of each item in the store.

"We have a story for every item in the shop, people love to know the history of what they're buying,” he said.

"We'll let the customers roam around freely without hassling them but when they have a question we are there with an answer.”
