New life members for association
ONE first played hockey in his 30s, the other has never played.
But that hasn't stopped the two newest life members of the Warwick Hockey Association.
Bernie Trapp and Don McDonald were recognised for their efforts after the toughest year in the association's history.
Trapp became involved in hockey in 1981 when his children Brent and Cassandra started in juniors. He helped out, played his first hockey a decade later with Harlequins and became Warwick's first level 2 coach.
He was coach when Warwick won B-division in the men's under-21 state championships in 1991.
Trapp, who was president in 1991, was the main instigator of moves to floodlight the main field for training and night games.
He worked hard to convince Toowoomba Hockey Association to admit the Warwick Wizards men's team to A1 and was the instigator, with the late Doc Bodimeade, of the decision of five clubs/associations to set up the Condamine Sports Club at the then Langham Hotel.
"I see myself here for the long haul to help out after the flood," Trapp said.
McDonald first helped out at hockey eight years ago when son Greg asked if he could help Darryl Gillam with ground maintenance.
Gradually, he became more involved as groundsman and, for the past four years, shared the role with Keith Phillips.
He didn't understand why Greg wanted him to attend a recent meeting.
"I was surprised when they presented me with life membership," Don said.
