New motor racing series has first outing in Warwick

MOTOR RACING: Morgan Park Raceway will host national level motor racing this weekend as the inaugural Australian Motor Racing Series is held on the Warwick track.

This is round three of the series, which is the brainchild of the team behind Winton Raceway in Victoria.

Winton operations manager Wayne Wiliams said their in-house events had resulted in a lot of positive feedback.

"We've been running our meets a specific way for some time and we've always had people telling us to take the product on the road,” he said.

"It's all about giving motorsport enthusiasts around the country a professional but relaxed, safe and, most of all, affordable racing series to compete in.

"It was about marketing that thing we do that no one else does as well.”

The weekend will feature racing all day both Saturday and Sunday, including a GT series and production car series.

The GTs will take to the track in two 50-minute races and the production cars will race over two lots of eight-lap sprints and one 50-minute race.

Morgan Park Raceway will also be abuzz with the sound of the Mazda RX8 Cup Series, Aussie Ute Series, Formula 3, Qld Formula Vee, Qld classic sports sedans, stock cars and the amazing miniature race cars (pictured above).

Williams said spectators were most welcome over the two days of racing.

Entry is $15 on Saturday and $20 on Sunday, with a two-day pass costing $30.

"We tried to keep a consistency and cutting back on stress and red tape by bringing the same staff to each event,” he said.

"Especially those in key positions, such as starters, flag marshals, scrutineers.

"These guys are all the chief stewards and then we bring in the locals to assist and share the local knowledge.”

The event will feature drivers from Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria, with a couple of teams making the trip from South Australia.

"We have 110 nominated vehicles starting this weekend, which is really pleasing,” Williams said.

"We're not even at the halfway point of the competition for this year and we're already over-subscribed for next season's entries already.

"This is a pretty serious passion for all of these guys and we're giving them a chance to race in places they wouldn't normally see.

"It's also a fantastic chance for people from rural and regional areas to race in a true national event.”
