Warwick pies catch the eye of authors
ALTHOUGH not one hundred percent sure how her family business came to feature in the Pie Buyer's Guide to Australia, Gail Steele said she was excited when she found out.
"We got a letter in the mail," she said.
"It came with a photo of the page from the book."
The book was written by the Clancy brothers; the youngest Tony is a journalist and editor while older brother Paul is a retired journalist.
Together they travelled Australia to find the best pies the country had to offer.
Their scrutiny was based on pastry texture, filling quality, filling to sauce ratio and of course, the overall taste of the product.
Mrs Steele said she was "really quite shocked" when she found Steele's Bakery and Cafe had earned a place in the book.
"We were given four out of five pies," she said.
"Not all of the reviews were in favour of the products.
"So four out of five is good.
"It is almost perfect."
An excerpt from the book shows the brothers were impressed with the place before they even laid eyes on a pie.
"You only have to look at the exterior of this bakery to get a feeling of old values and to sense good pies are to be had," it read.
"This one was on the 'must go to list' and didn't disappoint."
Mrs Steele was glad to know the bakery had become well known enough to be placed on the "must go to list".
"The pie they tasted was my new recipe for beef and gravy pie," she said.
The four out of five rating gave Mrs Steele confidence.
"I am planning on entering this pie in the next big Aussie pie competition," she said.
Warwick Famous Pie Shop also made into the book.
