New principal kicking goals

KORT Goodman is almost three quarters of the way through his first year as principal of Assumption College and is loving his time in the Rose City.

Mr Goodman said the role was a great opportunity.

"I was drawn to it immediately, because my heart is really entrenched in country education,” he said.

"I've always loved Warwick, it's always been so warm and welcoming and the opportunity to take on my first principal role at a school with such a great reputation was too good to pass up.

"There's plenty to get involved in here in Warwick, whether it be sport or culture or rural life.”

Born in Malaysia, Mr Goodman came to Australia with his family at the age of two.

"My parents had been in the Royal Australian Air Force, but left all that and moved to the country,” he said.

"I grew up in Roma, living both in and out of town and did all my schooling there.

"I absolutely loved the country life, it was an excellent upbringing,” he said.

"So many opportunities to play a lot of sport, which I did, mostly rugby league and cricket.”

Mr Goodman went on to play rugby league at a representative level.

"I played U19s for Qld and represented the Australian Uni team,” he said.

"I played A grade for three years in Brisbane for Valleys and Wests, generally played in the half-back or hooker positions.”

Mr Goodman said rugby league was his life's passion.

"I'm currently the Australian secondary schools events co-ordinator and run the U15 and U18 Australian rugby league schoolboys championships,” he said. "Sure it adds a bit to the workload but I love it and it gives me great satisfaction,” he said.

Mr Goodman said his future was all about maintaining the good reputation of Assumption College.

"We want to continue our high standards of looking after the kids and at the same time improve academic outcomes,” the passionate educator said.

"I'd also love to see all the schools in Warwick work together and push together to create a supportive and vibrant community.

"And there will also be kids that take off to the city after school to pursue further study and careers. "That's great because a lot come back to the country and bring their skills and knowledge with them, which strengthens the community even more.”
