New spin on an age-old craft

SPINNING is an old craft with a new twist for the 100 spinners and weavers who gathered at Leslie Dam on Saturday for their annual camp.

Warwick Spinners and Weavers 2009 Camp co-ordinator Janice Flood said spinning was quite fascinating.

“This is our 35th annual camp,” Mrs Flood said.

“If you look at it, it is about keeping the craft alive.

“Spinning goes back a long time; we don't know how long.”

Mrs Flood said modern technology meant new fibres were now available to be spun.

“There are Alpaca fibres, soybean and bamboo,” Mrs Flood said.

“Some people even spin their dog hair.

“Nowadays the things that are being done are new.”

Mrs Flood said there was an increase in the number of people learning to spin.

“Our group alone has gone from about 10 members to 40 members, that's quite an increase,” she said.

“Even young people are picking it up.

“It's nice to see that the craft is going to be carried on for future generations.”
