New strategy aids job search
CASEY Saunders said she would have "struggled a lot" to find work if Mission Employment Solutions hadn't stepped in and helped the 22-year-old land a job at Warwick's Mussels Restaurant.
"I'm really enjoying it here, we are more like friends and like a little family," she said.
Miss Saunders said she had been happily working the front counter of the business for 13 weeks and one day hoped to move into the kitchen.
Mission joined forces with six Warwick businesses to launch a new indigenous employment strategy yesterday - aimed at giving indigenous job-seekers a go.
While the aim was to get many more Warwick businesses on board, Mission's regional manager for indigenous programs Deeann Natividad said it was an impressive start.
"It's a fantastic result and it's great to see employers make the commitment," she said.
Warwick Sandblast & Powderpaint, APN Print, Wickham Freight Lines, Southern Downs Regional Council, and Canterbury Meats also signed on for the program.
"This strategy is about bringing people together and building the capacity of local businesses to create opportunities for indigenous job-seekers," Ms Natividad said.
"All the employers we have worked with have been keen to employ indigenous people, but have been unsure of the best way to recruit.
"We have developed the new (strategy) to make sure they are better equipped to recruit, retain and develop their Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff."
Mission Australia Ambassadors, Queensland Reds twins Saia and Anthony Faainga were on hand in Warwick to launch the program and said the cause was close to their hearts.
