New tip started

CONSTRUCTION of the new and improved waste transfer station at The Summit is underway.

Southern Downs Regional Council manger of environmental services Tim O'Brien said the project would replace the existing tip at The Summit.

The upgrade is part of the council's waste reduction and recycling plan for 2014-2024.

The new facility is being constructed at Taggart Rd, a site chosen after an extensive search for suitable areas within the region.

"The new facility will be much larger, with site supervision and a covered disposal area, similar to that of the recently expanded disposal area at the Stanthorpe waste management facility," Mr O'Brien said.

"The current 4.5 cubic metre bins will be replaced with two 30 cubic metre bins and the new facility will be able to accept bulk waste, such as household furniture."

DUMP NOT LOCKED IN

During construction, access to the existing facility bins will remain, but their location will change as construction progresses.

Work is expected to be finished in late 2015.
