Nine charged with drug possession

NINE people are due to appear in the Warwick Magistrates Court charged with drug possession after a series of raids conducted by police on Thursday.

A Warwick Police Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) spokesman said the raids were carried out by locally-based detectives along with the Police Dog Squad from Brisbane and a number of officers from the Tactical Crime Squad based at Ipswich.

"The operation was part of police activity targeting drugs during rodeo week in Warwick," the spokesman said.

"We located quantities of both cannabis and illegal steroids during the course of our searches of a number of premises in town."

A total of 17 charges were laid against those identified, including possession of a dangerous drug and possession of drug utensils.

Those charged included males and females who ranged in age from as young as 16 up to 50 years. All are due to appear in court on December 16.

The police presence in Warwick has been beefed up ahead of the rodeo weekend, with extra officers from Brisbane and Ipswich hitting town to ensure a well-behaved event.

As well as officers from the Tactical Crime Squad in Ipswich, police from the Ipswich-based Public Safety Response Team are in town, along with officers from the Traffic Branch in Brisbane.
