A NINE-year-old NSW girl has allegedly been molested by a driver at a holiday villa in Bali.

Australian authorities on Thursday night confirmed that Indonesian police were investigating the alleged sexual assault, believed to have happened at the popular beach town of Kuta about 9pm (local time) on Sunday.

"Australian consular officials are providing assistance to the girl's family," the foreign affairs department said in a statement on Thursday.

"We understand a suspect has been arrested."

According to local police, the girl's family had been staying for several days at the Kuta villa where the suspect was employed as a driver.
