Ninety play in charity day for Crime Stoppers

GOLF: Don Stewart is a regular on a Wednesday at the Warwick Golf Club but it was just a little bit more important yesterday when he teed off in a field of 90 at the Warwick Crime Stoppers Ranbuild We R Signs Day.

"This is an opportunity for the golf club to help the community,” he said.

"It is a day where we get one of the best responses from players during the year.

"I always play on Crime Stoppers day.”

He said the condition of the Warwick Golf Club course was as good as he had seen it.

"The course has been really good since it has been irrigated with the recycled water,” Stewart said.

"The recent rain was also great for the course.”

As for his own form, Stewart simply said it was ordinary.

Carole Brandon was one of the ladies playing on Crime Stoppers day and recalled her childhood as the daughter of a country police officer.

"There is more crime these days, parents aren't saying no to kids,” she said.

Crime Stoppers committee member Cheri O'Neill said the golf day had proved popular in the area down the years in the Warwick area.

"We are happy with the response today. It looks like a good day for golf apart from the wind,” she said.

"Crime Stoppers are very appreciative of the support, it is our major fundraiser for the year.”

The money raised goes to purchase promotional material which is distributed in the Warwick area and some to the Crime Stoppers Rewards Scheme throughout the state.

Championship lead

ROUNDS 3 and 4 of the club championships will be played at the Warwick Golf Club this weekend.

In men's A grade, one of the youngest players in the field, Declan Murphy, leads the championships on 144 from Kris McLennan on 147.

Murphy started with a par 69 last Saturday to establish the early lead, an outstanding round in the wind.

Reigning champion Tim Sutton and Geoff Hinze are equal third on 152.

Brett Donovan leads B grade by two shots from Brendan Landrigan, Cam Watt and Mark Thomas, while Wayne Wiedman is one shot in front of John Devitt and Gunter Nicklich on 187.

In the ladies, defending champion Sam Hinze is on 163 and 14 shots in front of current runner-up Anna Cox.

Donna Keogh is on 210 and leads B grade by two shots from Di Evans, Danielle Seibel and Justine Washbourne. Tomi Keogh is on top in C grade with 213 from Trish Roberts.

Ladies' president Judy Lester and Gwen Mills are on top of the leader board in the battle for the veterans' trophy.

See notes from all golf clubs in the district in All Sorts of Sports each Wednesday.
