No Eight Mile or dam mentioned in budget

OUR Federal and Local Members are sticking by their party's Federal Budget- dubbing it a big win for the region's agriculture and business sectors.

"This budget is all about building confidence and helping business, it is a really good news story," Member for Southern Downs Lawrence Springborg said.

Small businesses will have a lowered tax rate of 28.5% (for a turnover less than $2 million), tax deductions of up to $20,000 and no Fringe Benefits Tax on portable electronic mobile devices such as mobile phones and laptops.

Federal LNP Member for Maranoa Bruce Scott said the aim of the package was to provide small business owners, farmers and tradies the chance to expand their business and employee more staff.

"Business will be able to purchase new chairs, tables and a coffee machine," he said.

"While farmers can buy a new welder and tradies some new tools, it can all be written straight off their tax.

"It is great news, especially if all these items are being purchased from other local businesses."

While neither of the region's big infrastructure projects, the Eight Mile intersection and Emu Swamp Dam, got a mention in Tuesday night's budget announcement Mr Springborg said smaller infrastructure projects would be made possible.

These will include a wide range of road improvements with the government doubling the amount of money all local councils will receive through the Roads to Recovery program.

Mr Scott said it would be up to the council what projects this money was spent on.

"But I would like to see them use it to employ local contractors to do the work and buy as much of the equipment and materials as possible locally," he said.

Southern Downs Mayor Peter Blundell welcomed the extra roads funding.

But he said he was concerned about the new rule that means overseas workers no longer have a tax free threshold.

"As most are aware our region relies heavily on international workers I hope that this does not put them off coming," Cr Blundell said.

"I really do hope that this does not have a detrimental impact."
