‘No guarantee’ drilling will lead to mine in Goomburra

THERE is no guarantee coal exploration will lead to mining in the Goomburra Valley, according to APEC Coal.

The company behind planned coal exploration in the area has revealed more about the drilling process, describing it as a "win-win situation for everyone".

An APEC Coal spokesman said the company would begin drilling six holes late this month or early next month.

"Activity at each site will be completed in approximately two days and all work likely to last for about two weeks from start to finish," he said.

"The agreements with landowners are for this small drilling program only with any further work requiring new access and compensation agreements with landowners."

The company has compared the drilling procedure to drilling for a water bore, stating there was no harm to the environment or water sources when exploration was last undertaken in 2010.

"Drilling will be carried out no closer than 200m from any building as per DNRM (Department of Natural Resources and Mines) guidelines," he said.

"If the hole intersects significant water, the upper portion of the bore will be cased and signed over to the landholder for use as a water bore and the lower portion of the water bore will be cement-filled."

APEC Coal also stated it intended to hold several more informal meetings with property owners, as well as contacting adjoining landholders.

"We hope to leave infrastructure that will be beneficial for landholders long after the program is complete," a spokesman said.
