Touch team are no longer chokers

TOUCH: A change of name has done wonders for the Hairy's Hobos after they secured a 6-4 victory against Live Action in the Warwick touch A-grade grand final.

The team played as Jeff's Jokers but, after three grand final losses to Designated Drinkers, they were being referred to as Jeff's Chokers.

Not content with the nickname, team organiser Amanda Russell said they changed the name and shirt colour and won in their first season under the new name.

The Jeff came from team sponsor Jeff Hannaford, an accountant at Inglewood and Texas. His nickname is Hairy so the man who buys the shirts is still part of the team name.

The score in the grand final was 2-all at halftime and then 4-all before Shane Roberts and Kev Lowrey scored the final two tries.

Two of the team members travel long distances to games - Wendy Watson from Texas and player of the final Courtney Wainwright from Rosevale, north-west of Aratula.

"I first played in Brisbane and Amanda asked me to play one day we met at the Texas races," Wainwright said.

Each week she drives 75 minutes each way to games.

Russell said Brad Morrish and Josh Henry were two from Live Action who worried her team the most.

The second season for 2015 will start with a muster on July 29 at 6pm. New players are welcome.
