Abbott opposes conscience vote

TONY Abbott has confirmed he will oppose a conscience vote on gay marriage.

The Opposition leader said he wanted Coalition MPs to make a pledge to stand by the current law and maintain the policy the party held in the 2010 election.

"Marriage is between a man and a woman," he told Sky News on Sunday.

"Now every single member of my Coalition was elected on that position and I don't think we can break faith with the electorate," Mr Abbott said.

The issue is expected to be discussed by the Shadow cabinet on Monday.
