No state government support for radioactive waste

THE future of a proposed nuclear waste facility for Oman Ama hangs in the balance, with the Queensland Government stating it would not support any radioactive waste facility in the state.

The comments were made in a letter from the office of the Minister for Natural Resources and Mines to Dr Colin Owen from the anti-nuclear group, The Friends of Oman Ama.

In the letter, the minister Dr Anthony Lynham declares the State Government's stance on the issue.

"I wish to advise that the Queensland Government does not support, in any circumstances, anywhere in Queensland being utilised for radioactive waste storage," he stated.

According to the letter, the minister also wrote to federal resources minister Josh Frydenberg asking for the Oman Ama site to be withdrawn from the proposal.

Mr Frydenberg said the 120-day consultation period provided an opportunity to engage with the community and the Queensland Government.

"While I respect the views of those who may want to truncate this process, and appreciate their feedback, all members of the community should be given the continued opportunity to provide their views," he said.

"The outcomes and feedback of the consultation process will help inform the government's consideration of the next phase of detailed assessment."

For the Friends of Oman Ama, Dr Lynham comments have been taken as a sign of official support.

Dr Colin Owen said he believed the letter stated very clearly the government's position.

He said the letter was read out at a Friends of Oman Ama meeting earlier this week.

"I think the first reaction was surprise and the second reaction was along the lines we're going on," he said.

"It means that our State Government is supporting the position we've taken on this - that's pretty powerful support."

It's not the first time a State Government minister has spoken out on the issue.

Late last year, Queensland Minister for Energy Mark Bailey said he didn't support the proposal and would take the issue to cabinet if Oman Ama was chosen as the final site.

The comments from the State Government have prompted interest from Southern Downs MP Lawrence Springborg.

Mr Springborg said while the State Government was at liberty to adopt its own position, he found it "intriguing".

"I spoke to Dr Lynham and he said that while the State Government was comfortable for the process of consultation to continue, they'd prefer that the site not be in Queensland," he said. "It's very difficult to interpret what that means.

"People can make of that what they will - there will be people scratching their heads."

According to Mr Springborg, he had a conversation with Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk about Oman Ama when the proposal was first announced in November.

He claims the Premier said she was comfortable with the process of consultation, but didn't say what the government would do at the end.

The State Opposition Leader said his stance on the issue had remained consistent from day one.

"My position has always been that this should not happen at Oman Ama if there is no broad community support for it," he said.

"I respect all the views that have been provided - there is a mixture of views on this issue in the community."

The Friends of Oman Ama will present their view at a public meeting at McIntyre Hall in Inglewood next Friday. The event will be held from 6pm, with anyone welcome to attend.
