Warwick's new policemen is no stranger to rural life

WARWICK police have welcomed a new Patrol Group Inspector to the station, with Inspector Brian Cannon arriving on February 1.

Insp Cannon is no stranger to rural policing, having completed four years based in Innisfail.

"Innisfail is a rural community being one of the biggest areas for producing bananas and sugar cane," he said.

"While we left Innisfail with a fairly heavy heart, we have received a very warm welcome."

Insp Cannon, who was born in Stanthorpe, said he and wife Jill made the decision to move closer to family.

"We have adult children in Brisbane, and my mother in Toowoomba," he said.

"It was important for us to be close to family at this stage in their lives."

Insp Cannon followed in his father's footsteps when he joined the police force.

"My father, Alan Cannon, was a police officer for over 34 years," he said.

"It was almost a natural progression for me."

Insp Cannon has clocked up 35 years on the force so far, serving in a variety of positions.

"I've had roles from criminal investigation and traffic through to policy and planning," he said.

"While we do come across people being antisocial, the other side is enjoying the freedoms and environment we have which is pretty darn good.

"We are all part of the same community - it's the thread that binds us all."
