No vacancy in Warwick a sign of the times

WARWICK was bursting at the seams at the weekend, in a sign that the days of Warwick being a town that people simply passed through, could be long gone.

Hotels and motels were full, restaurants and cafes ran hot and local tourist attractions were packed with out-of-towners.

Buckaroo Motor Inn operations manager Justin Fraser said the long weekend had been huge on the Southern Downs.

"With the huge polocrosse tournament on, as well at the motor racing at Morgan Park, the town was chockers,” he said.

"Without the Morgan Park precinct Warwick definitely wouldn't have the need for 18 or so motels, that's for sure.

"From now until October is our busy season, you'll be lucky to see a weekend where there are too many vacancies.”

At Queen Mary Falls Caravan Park and Cafe, owner Louise Reed said the growth had been phenomenal since they took over seven years ago.

"A long weekend like this one is just massive, it was non-stop,” she said.

"Our long weekend numbers from when we started are now our normal weekend numbers. Our old weekend numbers are our mid-week numbers today.

"And a lot of people aren't just coming to see the falls any more, they're driving on to Killarney and Warwick, before doing the loop back through the gap to Brisbane.”

Mr Fraser said the motel had started to notice a shift in mid-week visitors in the last six to eight months.

"Lots of hotels around town are starting to be a lot busier mid-week thanks to council pushing through a lot of developments, there are so many more tradies and contractors staying in town,” he said.

"There's little doubt the movement through town is rising steadily.”
