Noosa clears de-amalgamation debt before deadline

NOOSA has not had to go cap in hand to the State Government to ask for extra time to pay off its accredited $2.27 million de-amalgamation debt.

According to Noosa Council chief executive officer Brett de Chastel, paying off the liabilities six months ahead of the mid-2015 deadline has been a boon for ratepayers.

Noosa Council's clearing of $2.27 million worth of de-amalgamation costs six months ahead of the deadline "means we've reduced the amount of ratepayers' money spent on interest charges".

All four de-amalgamated councils were given Queensland Treasury Corporation line of credit loans, which covered de-amalgamation costs approved by the Transfer Committee as part of the de-amalgamation process.

The deadline was extended from December 2014, after two other councils lodged hardship claims.

Mr de Chastel said "astute" financial management meant Noosa had no need to ask for an extension.

He said the council undertook a service review ahead of the 2014-15 budget.
