Qld measles alert issued after six cases at North Lakes

QUEENSLAND Health has confirmed six cases of measles in North Lakes and issued a measles alert for anyone who visited several venues across Brisbane.

A measles alert is issued for people that visited the following venues between May 8 and 21

• The North Lakes Aquatic Centre on the afternoon of May 16
• Brisbane Entertainment Centre Boondall on May 15
• A car show at the Rocklea Showgrounds on May 9
• Mercure Hotel at North Quay on May 8,9, and 10.

Public Health physician Dr Madhu Chatterji said information had been sent to the venues where possible.

It has also been confirmed that two infectious people visited the Redcliffe Hospital emergency department, one on May 11, and one on May 21 . The hospital is contacting those who may have been at risk of exposure.

"There is no known link to any other identified case of measles," Dr Chatterji said.

"Public Health is ensuring that infection control measures are in place and will continue with contact tracing to limit further spread of the disease."

People with symptoms of measles are urged to contact their GP to make an appointment.

"When phoning to make your appointment you should inform the practice that you may have measles, so that processes are in place to protect other patients from exposure," Dr Chatterji said.

"GPs can provide free measles vaccination for both children and adults born during and after 1965."

"Two doses of a measles containing vaccine will provide long term protection from the infection."

True measles is a highly infectious and serious viral infection that causes fever, cough, runny nose, sore eyes, and then a red spotty rash a few days later. It is often a severe disease and occasionally measles has dangerous complications.

It is spread by tiny droplets in the air or by contact with infected secretions from the nose or mouth.

A fact sheet for the public about measles is available from Queensland Health.
