RODEO: Two of last year's title winners have started this year's The Carlton Dry Warwick Rodeo National Finals with first round wins.

Troy Wilkinson from Upper Horton (NSW) won round 1 of the bull ride at the APRA finals after being a runaway winner in the title battle last year.

Wandoan rider David Worsford has won round 1 of the bareback bronc ride, the first event in round 1 in the national finals on Thursday night at the Warwick Showgrounds. Former Gore rider Fred Osman didn't record a score when his horse bolted across the arena in round 1.

Four Warwick riders are competing in the saddle bronc final and the best of the locals in round 1 so far is Mark Collins with 73, equal third.

There is no round 1 winner yet as there is a re-ride tonight.

The current leader among round 1 riders with a completed round is Wandoan cowboy Cameron Webster on 76. Victorian star Heath Chalmers is second in 74 with Collins, Mitchell rider Greg Hamilton and current titleholder Brad Pierce from Tooma (NSW) equal third on 73.

Warwick rider Peel Tribe scored 71 in round 1, Lane Grayson was judged not to have marked out correctly so didn't score and Michael Maher bucked off in his first ride back after injuring an ankle while winning Mt Isa in August.

In the team roping, Jeff Miller, of Warwick, and team-mate Cory Heath from Tabbita (NSW) didn't record a time but Warwick cowboy Mitch Eastwell roped his beast in the rope and tie.

Round 2 action starts at 6pm tonight, round 3 is at 6pm Saturday and round 4 at 2pm Sunday.

There are second-division, junior and local rodeo events earlier each day.
